Victorian Oak Extending Dining Table by Gillows
A substantial and extremely well made antique Victorian extending circular dining table made by Gillows of Lancaster. In quarter-sawn oak and with four leaves, this large 5ft round table extends by means of two runner systems to just over 12ft 6 allowing it to seat up to 12-14 people with all leaves in place. A clip holder within the mechanism provides useful storage for the brass clips or forks which hold the leaves together. With a thumb moulded edge to the top and plain frieze below it stands on five turned and reeded legs with sunken brass castors. Would also make a fantastic boardroom or conference table.
In a rich dark golden honey colour with striking ‘tiger grain’ pattern from the medullary rays, this table has been sympathetically cleaned and polished using traditional hand methods. Solid and strong the runners to the pull-out mechanism are made from good quality dense mahogany and stamped with the Gillows Lancaster serial or work number L25764. These serial numbers were introduced by the company in about 1870. Original small brass eyes to the underside of one end allow, we assume, the addition of a modesty curtain. Some wear and marks consistent with age including a small piece let in to the top, a ring mark and some minor repairs to the leaf mouldings at the corners.
Extended Length - 12ft 6.75 / 150.75in (383cm)
Closed Length - 5ft / 60in (152.5cm)
Width - 5ft / 60in (152.5cm)
Height - 29.68in (74.5cm)
Legroom - 23.5in (59.5cm) under frieze, 28.38in (72cm) under leaves
If extra legroom is required a set of wooden castor cup risers can be purchased separately.
