Victorian Oak Extending Dining Table & Leaf Holder
A superb Scottish Victorian extending dining table and leaf holder by Wylie & Lochhead of Glasgow and designed in the Gothic Arts & Crafts style. In golden quarter-sawn oak with four original numbered leaves it stands on substantial spiral carved legs, redolent of the later slow wrythen twists of Sir Robert Lorimer, and with concealed castors to the feet. Unusually wide at 5ft the rounded rectangular top maximises seating space and is finished with a moulded edge and beaded apron. The Joseph Fitter winding mechanism smoothly extends the table from 6ft to a maximum of 12ft and with all four leaves in place this table will seat from 14 up to 16/18 people with two at each end.
The matching leaf holder also functions as a serving table or sideboard. With a panelled front and sides, leaf motifs to the frieze and matching spiral turned columns it has doors at both ends which open to reveal green baize lined storage slots for the four leaves. The rear is stamped ‘24970 / Wylie & Lochead / 45 Buchanan Street / Glasgow’.
Both in very good condition with a desirable golden honey oak colour and characteristic medullary rays (tiger grain). Minor marks consistent with age and use, the leaves are stamped with consecutive numbers to the side and any number of the leaves can be added, the winder handle is included.
Extended length - 12ft 1/4in / 144.25in (366.5cm)
Closed length - 6ft 1/2in or 72.5in (84cm)
Width - 5ft / 60in (152.5cm)
Height - 29in (73.5cm)
Leaves - 17in, 17.5in and two at 18.5in (43.5cm, 44.5cm and two at 47.5cm)
Legroom - 23.5in (59.8cm) under end frieze and 27.5in (70cm) under inserted leaves If extra legroom is required a set of wooden cup raisers can be made.
Leaf holder - 67in wide x 25.63in deep x 36.75in high (170cm x 65cm x 93.5cm)
Chairs are shown for illustration purposes and are available to buy separately at the time of listing.
