Victorian Elegant Inlaid Mahogany Parlour Sofa
This elegant antique sofa dates from c.1890. It is in need of reupholstery and some restoration. The sofa has a swept shaped back rail, an upholstered back panel and an over-upholstered seat. It has a carved laurel wreath decoration to the top of the back panel. It has serpentine arms and is supported on elegant tapering swept legs with decorative roundels to the tops of the front legs. The sofa has lovely cross-banded and string inlay. We believe it to be constructed from mahogany and walnut.

Condition Overall this handsome piece does need some restoration and would benefit from being reupholstered. There is some movement in the joints and these would benefit from being tightened. There is some scuffing, scratching, knocking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and some areas of veneer loss, which is worse to the bottoms of the front legs. There is an area of wood loss to the bottom of the left-hand front leg, and some denting to the top rail. There are some signs of old restoration and repair, including to one of the back legs. The chair would originally have had decorative roundels to the sides of the front legs as well as the fronts, but these are now missing. The upholstery is faded, grubby and worn, and the seat is sunken and lumpy where the stuffing has moved. The upholstery is ripped on the back of the back panel.
