VERGE BRACKET CLOCK -Early painted dial
This is a fine English bracket antique clock dating from the last quarter of the 18th Century by Joseph Wood of Bristol and would date circa 1775.
This is a very interesting and rare clock in respect of the dial which demonstrates the early use of the painted dial which had been invented only a few years earlier to compete with the popular and also recently used silvered sheet brass dials and the more usual brass chapter ring and spandrel type.
What most people don't realise that these dials were hand made and equal or more in price compared to brass dials. The gold gesso work is slightly raised and the execution of the blackwork exquisite.
These early painted dials are works of art and should not be confused with the factory made ones popular in the 19th Century.
The dial itself is in outstanding original condition in untouched order save the blackwork with has been professionally refreshed some years ago.The images are a good representation.
The case is made from oak and veneered in fruitwood the ebonised.
The inverted bell top is has a handle and all four corners are summounted by finials. The inner of the front door is gilded brass.
The restored side fretts are pierced wood and the back door glazed.
The canted front corners have brass decoration as has the bell top.
?The 7 inch dial is signed in a cartouche by the maker and the pierced steel hands are original
?The twin fusee 8 day duration bell striking movement has verge escapement with a beautifully engraved back plate depicting a sailing ship and a pull repeat facility
?The clock is 19 inches tall (handle up) . The width is 11 inches and the depth 7 1/2.
The condition is excellent and original with a deep shine to the polish but like all antiques there are age related marks as can be expected on any item of this age .The rear of the item has faded obviously through being exposed to sunlight . but I am certain that the most discerning client will not be disappointed unless they like their antiques to be restored to the point that they look new.
?This is a genuine and original clock and I offer a full money back guarantee to this end.
Any potential clients are very welcome to view the clock prior to purchase (or pay on delivery)to ensure that they are satisfied with their purchase.
