Provenance. This shield was bought from a private estate in Dorset where it has been since it was acquired from the British museum it was sold with a small collection of other weapons of considerable merit by a reputable West Country auction house who were in no doubt of its provenance. The pice of paper now mounted has been with it from it he day it was acquired. It reads Sudanese shield from the Gordon collection. British museum. General Gordon was killed while defending Khartoum 1885. “ decoration restored “. This is particularly fine example of one of these shields with a central star boss with four bosses surrounding. The shield is of some considerable age as was typical of Sudanese weapons this would have been passed through generations I would date this from the 18 century The shield is made of leather with the original rope and rag grip on the back. Very rarely do weapons come onto the market of this quality and provenance.
