South Wales Dresser with Harvest Theme Carvings.

Unique 19th.c. carved oak dresser dated 1872. Ideal shelving in a kitchen or shop perhaps, it features a tall rack with six adjustable shelves arranged in three rows with three small spice drawers below and flanked on each side with long cupboard doors. Raised on turned spindles and a panelled back over a deeper open base with four adjustable shelves (15″ depth) and turned feet front and rear.
Originating in the village of St Hilary the in the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales, the village name is carved on the left hand cupboard door. St Hilary sits at the heart of an area well known for its agriculture and theme of harvest is represented in the carving on the cupboard doors which feature swelling pea pods, a bunch of grapes, ripe ears of corn and a long chard like leaf. Possibly commissioned as a wedding piece, the middle panels feature entwined initials set amongst blackberry and passion flowers, whilst the bottom of the right hand door is also carved with the date 1872. Topped with an unusual shaped cornice and with a repeated leaf detail to the front edges, the remarkable decorations are completed with rather enigmatic Latin phrase ‘Cui Bono’ (who benefits) carved on the front of the middle drawer. A repair to the cornice and some old marks to the top of the base, otherwise excellent original condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
Dimensions: width 63″, depth 18″, height 88″. Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes. Alternatively you are welcome to view and collect at our large warehouse showroom in Llandudno Junction, North Wales (approximately 45mins from Chester). We have a large and ever changing selection of genuine good quality antique furniture of all types and have twice been shortlisted for the Home and Antiques Magazine Antique Shop of the Year Award. 01492 580022.
