Sherwin & Cotton General Booth Photographic Tile
Maker Sherwin & Cotton
Item Photographic portrait tile of General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army.
Details Probably modelled by George Cartlidge. Beautifully done, the portrait appears to have a three-dimensional quality. Stamped into the back is 'Portrait of General Booth 1904 Made by Sherwin & Cotton Eastwood Works Hanley Staffs'. There was a paper label for the London & Staffordshire Decorated Tile Co. stuck over the lower part of this stamp - this is now loose but still present. The tile is framed in a vintage oak frame - we are not sure whether this is original.
Condition Overall in good condition with some wear consistent with age. The tile is overall grubby and has some crazing and scratching to the front. There is some nibbling around the edges. As is mentioned above the paper label that was stuck to the back is now loose, and this label is discoloured and worn, chipped and creased around the edges.
The approx. measurements are as follows
Tile - 21.5cm high, 14cm wide
Frame - 24.5cm high, 17cm wide. Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
