Shaw of Leicester Longcase clock
An 8 day mahogany longcase clock by Shaw of Leicester , possibly David Shaw who is listed as working in Cheapside in the early 19th century .
The figured mahagony case is well made and in very good order. It has much decoration in the form or rosewood cross banding, stringing and other bandings . With a swan neck pediment, cantered corners to the trunk and base and standing on bracket feet .This style of case is quite common in the Leicester and surrounding area with the trunk door design the real give away feature for cases made in this region.
The dial which is marked Wilson is very well painted . Wilson was manufacturing dials in Birmingham and this will be one of his later examples . The corners are shown with the four continents -Europe, Asia, Africa and America .The arch has a country scene with a finely pained Sheppardess tending her flock .Hands are of brass and original to the antique clock and quite usual for a clock of this period .
The very good quality movement would seems to be the work of the Deacon family from nearby Barton in the Beans and would have been suplied to Shaw .This practice is quite common and very often the name on the dial is just that of the retailer . Note the finely turned pillars to the movement and other Deacon features .
