Shakeshaft of Preston with Rolling Moon. Longcase
Longcase antique clock by William Shakeshaft of Preston
with 'Halifax' rolling moon.
circa 1810
At just over 7ft tall, this neat mahogany 8 day clock has a 14" painted dial with Arabic numerals, popular from about 1810-1820.
The rolling moon within the dial face is often referred to as a "Halifax" or "Axe Head" and is a feature of mid Lancashire.
The mahogany case has fine fluted quarter columns, and the hood has fluted door pillars with Corinthian capitals. Swan neck pediments are to the top, and there is fine inlay below and a brass finial. The 8 day movement strikes the hour.
William Shakeshaft was born circa 1748, and died possibly about 1826. He was admitted as a freeman of the Smiths company in 1782 by Richard Lomax clerk.
He was working in the Market Place Preston from 1818 to 1820.
ref. Susan Stuart. Biographical list of Clockmakers. North Lancashire and South Westmorland. 1680-1900
