Seventeenth Century Welsh oak side table. welsh seventeenth century oak %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a very interesting period Welsh side table. The verve of the carving make it a good example of Welsh folk art and the desire and skill to personalise and decorate space and furnishings.

The side table comes from Denbighshire in North Wales. It is made in oak and it probably dates from the end of the seventeenth Century and the beginning of the eighteenth (1690 - 1730)

The table stands on simple stiles, the front legs chamfered to give a lighter elegance to the front. The table has a single drawer. This table is period simplicity at its best.

The table is heavily carved. There is real gusto in the way it has been carved and the designs are bold. I would imagine the carving is by an amateur hand, ambitious rather than trained. I love the wonkiness of some of this carving. There is real charm in it. This is clearly a family piece and I wouldn't be surprised if it was carved by a family member rather than outsourced to a carver.

It is hard to date careving like this and it may be that it was carved at different dates. The reeded detailing at the top of the stiles is a Georgian design and it could be that this is when the carving was accomplished. I love the ing and the sophisticated fretwork design to the apron. That must have taken some doing working with thick hard oak. The lozenge shaped floral decoration is also very charming and very well done.

The side table is structurally solid. The finish is very good. (Old oak polishes beautifully.)
The drawer has been extensively renovated which is always a sign that this piece of antique furniture has always been valued.

This is a very interesting piece of Welsh furniture and history and if you are drawn to quirkiness rather than fashionable style you will love it like I do.

The side table is 35 inches wide and 28 inches high and 19 inches deep
