Seventeenth Century oak coffer blanket chest
This is a really good blanket chest. It is late seventeenth Century, dating to around 1700 or so.
The first thing to notice is that it has its original feet!! This is so rare. The feet are pretty good with nibbling especially to one back foot but it is remarkable how well they have survived. The chest is made in oak. It has four recessed panels to the front and recessed panels to the sides and even the back. There is a very similar chest illustrated in Twiston-Davies' book on Welsh Furniture.
The chest is inlaid in mahogany with the initials W. M. The top frieze has deep thumb carving. The front panels are inlaid in a diamond design, presumably with bog oak and boxwood? There is pilaster type carving around it.
This is a beautiful early coffer. Inside, the coffer has its original planked base and a candle box.
The oak to this coffer has a wonderful patina and is very original. A good chest like this used to be four figures and then some so now is the time to buy and due to the vagaries of our times a really good chest like this doesn't cost much more than the average sort of later chests that are being advertised.
This is a handsome piece and is very useful for storing blankets and bedding etc. It will look wonderful in period or more modern and eclectic settings. Good thing.
The chest is 60 inches wide and 30 inches high and 22 inches from back to front.
