A good 18th century English lantern antique clock by Richard Rayment of Bury St. Edmonds, circa 1720. A brass case with a silvered chapter ring and a well engraved dial centre signed 'Rich Rayment St. Edmonds Bury'. A genuine18th century hand but a little large. An anchor escapement, rope driven of 15 hours duration (striking can be silenced to run longer). Nicely finished steel work to the mechanism. A later bell and strap. A Victorian purpose made carved oak wall bracket of high quality.
Height of clock 15" / 37 cms Width & Depth 6 1/2" / 17 cms
Height of bracket 25" / 63 cms Depth 9" / 23 cms Width 14" / 35 cms
Richard Rayment of Bury St. Edmonds in Suffolk is a noted maker and a similar example is shown in Loomes' 'Lantern Clocks' book on page 246. It is noted that these chapter rings are quite normal by this maker to break into the top space as shown here.
