A rare & hard to find ballerina Stratton 'Scone' compact in excellent condition. I have only ever seen two of these & the other was in poor condition. The lid shows an enamel ballet scene of great beauty signed by the Hungarian artist Pál Fried who was famous for his paintings of dancers & nudes. As you can see from this compact he was heavily influenced by Degas who is widely considered the finest painter of ballerinas & ballet scenes. The compact is signed "Fried Pál" as the Hungarians sign their last name first. The gorgeous lid lifts to reveal an excellent mirror which gives a perfect reflection. The mirror bezel has the inscription 'MADE IN ENGLAND'. The whole interior is gleaming lacquered brass that will never need to be cleaned as is the base. The inner lid is decorated with the 'Compact-in-Hand' logo & signed 'Stratton'. This logo shows that the compact is fitted with an automatic opening inner lid - just tilt the lid back slightly for the inner lid to open. This device was invented to save ladies nails from breaking when they opened the inner lid. It works perfectly every time. This delightful vanity still has the original felt pouch, puff & sifter - all of which are in excellent condition. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The base is also beautiful having the traditional fine spiral that is seen on Stratton 'Scone' compacts amongst others.
This rare & highly collectible vintage powder compact measures 3" & weighs 94 grams.
