This highly unusual piece transforms from a knee-hole desk into a complete writing desk/dressing table, everything the Officer would need whilst on campaign. Firstly the centre of the top folds back, then the sides of the top fold to the left and right (these can be further opened to contain documents) this then allows three sprung loaded compartments (one each side and one at the back) to be released and to rise, finally a leather writing surface slides forward and down. The whole desk is constructed from dense Cuban mahogany and retains its original locks, lifting handles and castors. The handles are replacements. 1160 mm wide, 625 mm deep and 915 mm high. Circa 1840 W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries.
