This is such a wonderful French antique compact made possibly in the 1910s or before. As you may know we like to research the history of the items in the shop but no one can find out anything about this maker. Nevertheless this does not detract from the piece - only make it more fascinating! The subject matter makes the compact highly collectible - Cupid stands in a gorgeous wood having just fired the arrow. Such a charming & romantic gift this would make! We have made no attempt to clean the antique vanity - so glorious is the deep dark patina it has acquired over the last 100 years.
It is very gorgeous and a joy to hold. The lid is finely engraved with great attention to detail. Around the edge of the lid is a flower, foliage & at the bottom a shield. The sides & base are decorated with a guilloche pattern. The base is signed 'ARTES'. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The mirror gives a good reflection - lots of very subtle ages spots that just add to charm of this beauty. Measures just over 1 1/2 inches diameter.
