Rare First Period Worcester Hancock Mask Hunt Jug
A very rare large Worcester porcelain jug with moulded cabbage leaf body and mask spout. A very rare and extremely detailed Robert Hancock black on-glaze printed design of a continuous hunting scene runs around the body of the piece with two subsidiary prints around the neck with hunted game animals strewn around recumbent hounds. This jug was a special commission with an inscription "Succefs to the Crosby Hunt" (sic) and decorative touches to the handle and inside the rim and spout. Its large size means it was likely used during post-hunt celebrations. A striking and interesting piece of Lancashire / Liverpool social history. c.1758-1765.
It measures 22.8cm (9") high, 19cm (7 1/2") spout to handle and 15.2cm (6") wide. It has a capacity to the brim of 2,375ml / 4 pints so easily holds 2 litres / 3 pints for practical use.
Condition: there have been some professional repairs to the neck section and a couple of hairline cracks extending part way further down. These have all been professionally stabilised and the original break was above the top of the handle so it can still support the weight of its contents. It is fully watertight and with sensible care it can be used. The handle and spout are fine and there isn't any restoration. Minor handling wear, mainly just a little rubbing to the lower areas of the two main horsemen.
Payment is accepted by bank transfer, card payments (via an online invoice, I'm afraid we cannot take payments over the telephone), Paypal and UK personal cheque. If you prefer to pay by Stripe please go to our website where we offer that option and additionally options to "Pay in 30 days" and to pay in 3 instalments, all securely supported.
Price includes UK shipping. Worldwide shipping is also available, please ask for a cost.
