Pewter Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl, c.1926-39

1 of 6
This is a good quality pewter cream jug and sugar bowl from the inter-war years. They are part of the Manor Period Pewter range produced by Travis Wilson & Co in Sheffield between 1926 and 1939.
Travis Wilson & Co was founded in 1908 as a successor company to George Travis & Co. They produced good quality pewter and silver plate at the Clarence Works in Sheffield until they were taken over in 1967.
Pewter has a long and distinguished history of service on our antique tables and for much of the 18th & 19th centuries it was the commonest material for plates and jugs. In the late 19th and early 20th century it became a material of choice for the Arts & Crafts movement and was also widely used by Art Nouveau designers. This cream jug and sugar bowl set have an all over planished finish and rounded handles, which is typical of pewter from the twenties and thirties.
Whilst the set has clearly been used, condition is generally good. Fans of pewter are split between those who like it polished and shiny and those who like to leave it to darken naturally. This set is somewhere between the two, so it could either be polished up or allowed to develop its patina. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 4.4cm high to the top of the body, 13.6cm from spout to handle and 9.8cm in diameter at its widest point. It weighs 169g.
The sugar bowl is 5cm high to the top of the body, 16.3cm from handle to handle and 12.5cm in diameter at its widest point. It weighs 277g.
The touchmarks on the base of each piece are Manor Period around a Tudor rose, T W & Co Ltd for Travis Wilson & Co Ltd, Sheffield Pewter and the product number 2080.
Shipping in the UK is £7 by My Hermes Tracked & Signed courier.
