Passing Strike dial clock, Thompson, Darlington
A small English dial antique clock by Samuel Thompson, Darlington, dating from the 1830-40s.
The 8-day fusee movement has a passing strike on the hour on a bell. The plates have shouldered plates, united by knopped pillars.
The 10” diameter convex iron dial has matching steel hands, in a mahogany case with turned dial surround and a cast brass bezel, fitted with convex glass.
Samuel Thompson, son of James, was born in Darlington in 1801 and succeeded his father by 1824, and married Margaret Wanless in about 1831. Samuel was a watchmaker, clockmaker and Clock movement maker and worked at High Row, Darlington. He was still working there in the 1841 census. He does not appear in the 1848 trade directory but there was a Thompson & Coverdale of Commercial Road, Darlington. This may be the same person. [source: ]
