Parquetry Writing Bureau by Tahan of Paris c.1870
Beautiful little late 19th.c. bureau writing desk by the celebrated French cabinet makers Tahan of Paris c.1870. Exceptional tulipwood parquetry veneered exterior of shapely bombe form with rosewood crossbanding and large brass mounts. Open the fall to reveal a fitted interior, also veneered to match, with three small stationery drawers, an open shelf and original green leather writing surface. With a single drawer (also veneered on the interior) below the bureau. Shaped apron to each side and slim curving cabriole legs. Original brass mounts running the whole length of the legs (and continuing to the top edge at the rear) ending in elaborately cast feet. Original escutcheon and handles on the internal drawers. Note also the large original lock with engraved decoration named for Tahan Paris. Some minor wear and repairs to the veneers, otherwise excellent colour and condition. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops, key supplied to work both the bureau and drawer locks.
Jean Pierre Alexandre Tahan (1813-1892) took over his father’s business in 1844 to become the official cabinet maker to Napoleon III and the Empress Eugine. Specialising in small exquisitely made antique furniture and objet d’art the company had a large store in central Paris and was awarded medals at the 1851 Great Exhibition.
