Pair of Low Mahogany Victorian Bookcases
A handsome pair of Victorian mahogany bookcases, each of these has 3 adjustable shelves and decorative ebonised borders.
– Three shelves each, adjustable on saw tooth supports.
– Low size, at just over a metre, so they do not overwhelm a room.
– Lovely ebonised borders on the side uprights and cornice edges.
– Nice, deep mahogany colour.
– Planked backs.
– Labels on the backs for Arthur, Cowley & Co, Oxford, a furniture removal depository, suggesting a likely storage location some time after around 1920.
A great pair of bookcases for a library or living room, which will stand at a level which does not overwhelm a space and allows plenty of wall area above for picture hanging.
In good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. There are some minor chips to the ebonised paint which are not out of keeping with the character of the pieces, with some cracking in one of the shelves which does not affect functionality and is unlikely to be visible when books are in place.
Date: 19th Century
Material: Mahogany
Origin: England
Height – 118 cm
Width – 109 cm
Depth – 28 cm
Newark Antiques & Interiors, Kelham Rd, Newark NG24 1BX.
