Open Bookshelves in the Manner of Liberty
Very unusual late 19th.c walnut open bookcase or display shelves c.1895. Of singular design with an asymmetrical arrangement of shelves and a beautiful pierced fretwork pattern to the sides. With a shallow gallery top, moulded shelf fronts and arched aprons and turned supports on a moulded plinth with square legs. Superb quality in solid walnut throughout. Maker is unknown but the style is redolent of the work of progressive and aesthetic movement designers such as E.W Godwin (particualrly the unusual step form middle shelf) or of Leonard Wyburd’s Moorish influence antique furniture for Liberty & Co. Stamped with the number L25705 to the rear. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
