This is a very good quality and primitive Charles II English antique oak six-plank coffer, circa 1670, with sought after small proportions. Originating possibly from the Midlands, this type of coffer was however constructed all over England. The coffer is constructed with a six planks, with chip edge carvings to the side of the front panel. Three diamond shaped carved lozenges with further carved floral centres, flanked by other floral carvings adorn the front panel. The coffer sits on its original length styles (feet), which is very rare to see. The reeded lid is hinged with a pair of very old, possibly Georgian, iron hinges. The coffer features a clasp and striking plate. The coffer features a working lock and key. The coffer has been constructed with the original handmade iron nails. Inside, the coffer retains its original candle box to the left hand side. The interior is clean and dry and would have been used for storing food, weapons and clothes. The back of the coffer features the original rough-hewn back and original floor. This is an important oak coffer having been around in the days of Charles II, Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland & Scotland and the Great Fire of London. This style of chest was the precursor to the chest of drawers.

This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom at the foot of a bed.

The coffer boasts a rich dark oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Condition Report
This coffer is in excellent condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The lid is hinged with a later pair of very old, possibly Georgian, iron strap hinges. The coffer features a later clasp and striking plate. The coffer features a working lock and key. The coffer has been constructed with the original handmade iron nails. Inside, the coffer retains its original candle box to the left hand side. The coffer stands on the original length style feet, which is very rare to see. There are no splits to the tops sides or bottom of the coffer. There is wear to the sides and front of the lid (see photos), however this inevitable due to its age and the fact that it’s a single piece top. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The coffer is solid in joint and ready to use. Considering the age of this very early coffer, it is in excellent condition and does not detract from its attractive appeal.
