Maud B.Worsfold RMS Watercolour Portrait Of A Lady Maud Beatrice Worsfold 1868-1955 Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering this lovely little oval watercolour portrait by the artist Maud Beatrice Worsfold, who has signed the portrait with her monogram to the centre left. The portrait depicts a young and very attractive lady with dark hair, piled up on her head, wearing a pearl necklace around her neck. She has a white or cream dress with frills around the shoulders and a stole of gauzy material. There are two bunches of violets at her decolletage.

Maud Beatrice Worsfold was born on 18th January, 1868 in Feltham, Middlesex, one of eight children of a civil servant in the Customs Department. She studied at the Royal Academy Schools in Kensington after being educated by a Governess at home. She was a portrait painter and miniaturist who exhibited from 1894-1938. She was elected a full Member of the Royal Miniature Society in 1898.

She exhibited 27 works at the Royal Academy, 38 at the RMS, 1 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and 74 at Walker's Gallery in London.

In 1916, according to Kelly's Directory, she was listed as an Artist living at 30 Davies Street, London W and, from the same source, in 1937 at 119a Mount Street London W.1. Possibly due to the imminent war, by the 1939 Register, which was a census taken of everyone living in the UK, she was living at 39 Canynge Square, Bristol with her brother, his wife and their daughter.

She died at Trowbridge in Wiltshire in 1955.

She is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) and her auction results are at the usual sites. For an artist who was painting and exhibiting for so many years, there are relatively few, possibly because portraits and miniatures tend to be kept within families.

The painting is mounted with a washline and is framed in its original 1 1/8" oval gilt frame, original glass and mahogany back. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang. The frame bears a label from Aug. Walker, Artists' Colorman, Picture Dealer and Frame Maker, 118 New Bond Street, London W. As he was trading as Walkers' Galleries after 1908, this dates the painting to between 1897 when he opened the busines and 1908.
