Marquetry longcase clock - S Cambridg(e) of London
We are delighted to offer for sale this superb marquetry longcase clock from the golden age of clockmaking with an 11 inch dial by Samuel Cambridg(e) of London dating from the end of the 17th Century.
The brass chapter ring dial is signed by the maker and is recorded as being apprenticed in 1683 , made a member of the Clockmaker Company in 1698 and died in 1704. This antique clock will circa 1695 .
As can be seen from the images the dial is beautifully made with well cast and chased spandrels , a well matted centre with ringed winding holes and engraving around the date aperture. There is a subsidiary dial for showing seconds.
The eight day duration five pillar (one now lacking ) movement is beautifully made and strikes the hours on a bell and is controlled by an internal countwheel . The collets are turned and ringed and there is decoration to some of the steelwork . It has been professionally restored and is in perfect working order
It has a lovely domed pendulum and brass cased weights.
The walnut and marquetry case is the most wonderful colour and has a lovely finish . The original hood door lock is present as are the steel hinges.
Hopefully the images should show the item accurately but prospective buyers are urged to view this clock to see how nice it really is.
This is a genuine and original clock and I offer a full money back guarantee to this end
The overall condition is outstanding for any item of the great age with only the odd age related mark and shrinkage split as can be expected. It is ready to go straight into the home and the overall condition will not disappoint the most discerning client .
It is a good size being only 6ft 8 inches tall to the top of the hood, 17 1/2 inches at its widest point and 9 1/2 inches deep. The centre of the trunk is only 11 1/2 inches wide.
I would encourage interested parties to view the clock and my limited photographic skill do it no favours at all and certainly do not show the quality of the finish.
My direct contact details are at the bottom of most of my listings should any interested party wish to get in touch.
