Mahogany Longcase with an Early White Dial

1 of 6
A particularly good and original example of an early white dial longcase clock by John Douglass of Chertsey.
The eight day duration, five pillar movement has Anchor Recoil escapement and rack strikes the hours on a well-tuned, cast bell.
It has an uncomplicated and clear, 12" wide, brake-arch painted iron dial with an off-white background. The corners and around the maker's name to the arch having raised gilt decoration. The arch having the maker's name of "JNo. DOUGLASS" (of) "CHERTSEY" in black capitals and the dial having a black circle encompassing outer Arabic five minutes, a minute ring and inner, Roman hour numerals. There is also a subsidiary seconds dial with Arabic tens and inner division ring. Below the centre hole is a drop-mouth calendar date aperture backed with a calendar disc with day ring and inner Arabic fives. The blued steel pierced hands are Serpentine style.
In a good 'London style' flame mahogany case of fantastic colour, patina and condition. The hood having a pagoda top with a silked wooden sound fret to the front and flat reeded pillars to the sides that terminate in a moulding and carry high quality brass ball-and-spire finials. The locking and glazed hood door is beneath a well-formed break-arch moulding beneath the pagoda and is flanked by two separate reeded pillars that are cabled with brass and have top and bottom brass Doric capitals. The hood sides have silked-backed wooden 'lattice' sound frets. The large Cavetto shaped trunk throat is supported on large quarter trunk pillars that are reeded and cabled with brass. They have brass quarter Doric capitals at the bottom but Corinthian capitals to the tops. The full-length trunk door has full, applied edge moulding and a break-arch top. The raised panelled base has a large Cavetto top moulding and a plain, double London plinth.
This is a fine quality clock that is stunning in appearance. it is extremely original and in fabulous condition. It is very rare to get such a good case that still retains its 'white' dial rather than a replacement brass dial and movement from a lesser case.
We have very carefully and sensitively restored the dial and case being careful to preserve the originality of them, this process took a considerable amount of time to ensure that they look exactly as they should after 240 years of being cared for without any of the age being removed. The pictures do not do this lovely clock justice.
