Mahogany Deception Table Regency 1790-1800
![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
1 of 6
This is a beautiful example of a deception table from the Regency period. From a distance this table appears to be similar to the popular Pembroke table, which is fitted with two drop leaves that can be raised to create a larger worktop. However, the deception is the fact that only one of the side leaves of this piece of furniture can be raised. The opposite leaf is is in fact disguised and the ingenious deception becomes clear when the lovely brass button that is fitted on one side of the table is pressed. Once pressed the leaf opens from the top downwards to reveal a 'secret and hidden' compartment.
Made from mahogany with depth and colour. The furniture maker has elevated the relatively plain design of the table by adding lovely reeded edging to the top. An elegant thin line of ebony inlay with crossgrain can be found just above the top of the square tapered legs.
The concept of a deception table is likely to have originated with the famous Gillow furniture makers. Their sketch book of summer 1787 features the design. The table would have appealed greatly to mistrusting Georgians that needed to hide secrets from their servants and visitors. Placed beside a chair or wall (making sure that the brass button is not on show) it will have tricked many to think that it was an ordinary Pembroke side table.

Condition The deception table is in great condition, it is sturdy with solid joints. It has been cleaned and received a light wax. The wood has two thin (historic) partings in the side panel. Another thin parting is found in the table top which is also faintly bowed. The brass button mechanism that operates the dropdown lid works beautifully.

We do our very best to describe our items with an accurate and detailed description. High quality photography accompanies all our listings. Due to the restrictions of this medium it is not always possible to represent the precise size, appearance or colours of a product fully.
The used and aged nature of antiques and vintage items means that it is not always possible to describe or photograph every imperfection, blemish, dent or scratch. The vast majority of our customers will know this and not expect to receive their antique in factory new condition. The worn look is a large part of the charm of buying old pieces after all.
We try to give the best information possible in our product descriptions. If known we provide details about the age, history, style, materials and of course the provenance of a piece. However Rocco Antiques cannot guarantee any of this information, it can only be given as a guide. By appointment we can provide the opportunity to view a piece in person.
As with all internet purchases we allow our customers 14 days to return any items. Unfortunately we are not able to contribute to the cost of returning your purchase. For returns we recommend that an insured and tracked delivery service is used by the customer.
