Mahogany Campaign Chest of Drawers by Ross & Co. D
Fabulous example of the classic 19th.c. officer’s campaign chest of drawers in mahogany by Ross & Co. of Dublin, perhaps the greatest name in Victorian campaign antique furniture, c.1870. With two short drawers over three long, there is also another shallow drawer for stationery and valuables,with original velvet lining, hidden abover the upper right hand drawer.
Designed to travel with an officer on long military campaigns it solidly constructed with solid mahogany top, sides and front and ash drawer linings. To further protect it from the rigours of travel the feet can be easily unscrewed to pack inside, whilst corners and edges are protected with brass bindings and the handles are flush fitting. Original maker’s label for Ross & Co. lists their address as 9,10 & 11 Ellis Quay Dublin. Excellent condition, cleaned and polished in our workshops, with original feet and brass work. Keys supplied.
A later label from a Surrey depository dated 1962 lists the owner at the time as a Major M. Wilson.
