Louis XIII walnut table box louis xiii 17th
An early 17th century French walnut box that is full of character. The box, sometimes called a bible box, sometimes a table box, was just a useful box that would have had an iron lock plate to the front and would have been used to store valuables. The hinges are original, as is the iron handle to the top - there are ironwork L shape straps which have been added a long time ago. The escutcheon is later and the lock has long since gone. As much early walnut has, this has had worm throughout externally (treated) and it has been later bri-waxed, but remains a charming little four hundred year old box.
