Library Table by William Trotter

Circa 1815, unusual shaped coromandel wood (also known as calamander wood) library table by William Trotter of Edinburgh which is freestanding. The top has a rectangular writing surface with a narrow crossbanding of coromandel. At each end is a D shaped section with a hinged lid to both left and right. The coromandel is veneered onto a mahogany carcass. The fore edge has the classic Trotter beading. Below the top are two drawers on each side, one dummy on each side. Again the drawers have the Trotter cock beading which is very fine. The drawers liners are made entirely of mahogany. The end sections are veneered in coromandel and have beading on both the top and bottom to frame it. This example has sunk fields and bead moulding which is a signature of Edinburgh work.
Below the top are elegant quadruple supports which are swept and finish in a curl with a carved rosette on both sides. Below this is a simple platform which is concave. This is supported on four sabre legs which finish with fine castings and brass tipped castors. The castings wrap over the front and sides of the feet in the form of oak leaves. The table retains its original patination. The top has been re-leathered. This is an elegant and classic piece of William Trotter antique furniture.
William Trotter was the survivor of the firm Young & Trotter Cabinet Makers and Upholsterers, who traded from 5 Princes Street Edinburgh from 1784. Trotter moved the premises to 9 Princes Street in 1810 and traded there until his death aged 61 in 1833.
