Liberty & Co Art Nouveau Pewter Bowl by Rex Silver
Here we have a romantic, highly polished Art Nouveau Pewter Bowl from Liberty & Co. The bowl has heart shaped handles and is decorated with clover leaves, a traditional symbol of love and marriage. It may well have originally been given as a wedding gift.
The bowl was designed for London's world famous department store Liberty & Co by Rex Silver in 1904 and remained in production up until around 1920, with most pieces dating to before the First World War. The Silver Studio was one of Liberty's most important designers, initially for fabrics and then for a broader range of items. It was a family firm consisting of Arthur Silver and his sons Rex and Harry and also employed the great Archibald Knox who was thus introduced to Liberty.
People's perception of pewter is often of dull grey metal but Liberty & Co always had their pewter items polished to a bright silver finish and they are generally at their best when presented this way.
Condition is generally good with just a few scuff marks on the inside of the bowl and in one place on the outside. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 28.2cm / 11ins from handle to handle, 21.5cm / 8.5ins across and stands 3.2cm / 1.25ins high. It weighs 492g / 17.3oz.
The underside of the bowl is marked ENGLISH PEWTER MADE BY LIBERTY & CO. and bears the product number 0287.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
