It is reasonable to suppose that wig racks like these, being very light and folding flat, were intended for travel. By this time very few people were wearing wigs so they may have been the preserve of lawyers and clergy when on the move. That would explain the extreme rarety of this item.This particular one is in boxwood and is very light as well as being very pretty. It has two gates with mushrooms for wigs and four pegs, which turn out, for cravats. Nearly everyone wore a stock in those days, especially lawyers, so four pegs woulď have been ideal. I think for a lawyer on the circuit or just working away for a few days this would still be so useful, ideal because it would fit the modern suitcase.
