Large Tall Victorian Heavily Carved Oak Bookcase
A lovely large heavily carved oak bookcase. We date this bookcase to the late 19th century.
The bookcase sits on a stepped plinth base with large flat bun feet and comes in two sections for transport, the base cupboard, the top glazed bookcase.
The base section is fitted with two side by side drawers over a cupboard. The drawers are heavily carved each with a face in the centre as the handles. The cupboard has two side hinged doors each having attractive differently designed hunting carvings in the centre, the interior of the base cupboard is fitted with a mid height wooden shelf. The right hand door has a key to pull open the door, (the lock is inoperable) and the left hand door has a mid height catch. There are carved pillars at the outer sides of the cupboard.
The top section is recessed and has an ornately carved stepped cornice and is fitted with two glazed side hinged doors with attractive carvings around the edge. Internally there are three adjustable wooden shelves. There are carved columns at the outer sides of the glazed doors. The right hand door is fitted with a lock (key is supplied), the left hand door has a top and bottom catch.
The bookcase has an overall height of 91" (231cm), a cornice width of 53" (135cm), a base width of 54” (137cm), a base height of 40” (101cm) and a base depth of 24" (61cm) at its deepest.
This lovely bookcase remains in a good solid condition with surface markings commensurate with age and usage, these include some wear around the base and some usage marks throughout. The lock has been removed from between the drawers at some time in the past and there are a couple of small pieces missing from the carvings on the doors.
This remains a very stylish bookcase cabinet. It could house a good sized collection of books etc. and will continue to provide sterling service for many years to come.
