Provenance
On the back of the Inside cupboard door is the small cabinet maker's stamp of 'Ralph Johnson of Warrington'. Ralph Johnson set up his business in 1860 as a cabinet maker and upholsterer operating from two premises in Warrington - one in Bridge Street and one in Rydale Street. His father had been a cabinet maker and Ralph quickly gained a reputation as a very high quality maker. His furnishings were bespoke made using the finest materials and he particularly worked in oak. He was one of the craftsmen said to have influenced Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson and the Cotswolds School.
