Large Arts & Crafts Brass Jug, William Soutter

Here we have a very large Arts & Crafts Brass Jug in the Normandy style from the late 19th century. The jug has a broad circular foot, a cylindrical planished body with an embossed floral motif, a domed lid with a curled finial and a c-shape handle. It is typical of the Arts & Crafts period.
The jug was made in Birmingham by William Soutter & Sons and dates to around the 1880s/90s. The firm began life as Soutter & Hicks in Birmingham in 1760 becoming William Soutter & Sons around 1800. They were coppersmiths and brass founders and particularly known for their kettles, tea urns and jugs. From the 1870s onwards they produced a range of Art Metalwares, particularly in the Arts & Crafts style. They closed in 1927.
The jug has developed a nice patina and overall condition is good. Probably originally intended for water or beer, it would look great next to a fireplace, make a striking vase or be an attractive piece for the garden. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is of substantial size with a capacity of 5.68ltr / 10 pints. It stands 38.1cm / 15ins high, is 33.5cm / 13.2ins from lip to handle and 24.5cm / 9.6ins in diameter across the base. It weighs 2.06kg / 72.6oz.
The underside of the base is stamped with the distinctive W S & S makers' mark for William Soutter & Sons.
