Joseph Kern Swansea 19th Century Longcase Clock
A very attractive 19th century Welsh 8-day longcase clock with a mahogany inlaid case. The hood is also in mahogany with a rounded top showing 3 brass finials and wooden lattice work.
To the lower part of the hood is a glass fronted door flanked by 2 ornately brass capped wooden columns. The face is a painted arch dial featuring farmyard and country scenes in the arch and to the corners of the face. The dial is in an unusual, raised form with a subsidiary second dial and a calendar aperture and shows the name Joseph Kern Swansea.
The movement is an eight-day type with 2 weights and a pendulum, striking the hour on a bell, which has recently been serviced.
Joseph Kern was known to have worked in Swansea circa 1835 to 1871 and is shown in trade directories as trading in High Street from 1844 to 1848. After this time, he appears with the designation "& Co" in 1850.
