John A.Cook Watercolour Caroline M. A. Cumberlege
We are offering this beautiful watercolour portrait by the artist John A. Cook, which dates to circa 1885. The painting depicts a three quarter length portrait of Caroline Mona Ada Cumberlege, 1870-1940, wearing a fitted petrol blue costume, which is buttoned down the front, with a bow at the neck. Her long light brown hair is pulled back into a bow at the back of her head and is hanging down over her shoulders. She has her arm around a wicker basket of flowers on a table. We know the name of the sitter from the old label on the back of the painting.
John A. Cook was born in 1858 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. His mother Isabella was born in Germany and his sister Elizabeth was also born in the Cape, South Africa. In the 1881 Census, he was living at 142 The Grove, Hammersmith, London and in 1883 he exhibited 2 paintings at the Grosvenor Gallery. After this, he no longer appeared anywhere in the census or death records, so he may have returned to South Africa, although his mother and sister remained in England.
He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.
Coincidentally, the sitter of the portrait, Caroline Mona Ada Cumberlege, was also born in the Cape, South Africa, the daughter of Lt. Richard Cumberlege 1834-1886, 11th Regiment, and his wife Blanche 1851-1905. On 31st December, 1890 Caroline married Sidney Frederick Marriott 1890-1927, at All Saints Church, Ennismore Gardens, Knightsbridge and the young couple returned to Fiji, where Sidney was the Civil Commissioner. They had one child, a daughter named Pauline Grace Marriott, who was born in Fiji in 1892. Sidney retired from the service in the late 1890s, due to ill health and died in 1927. Caroline, who seemed to use the name Ada in census records, died in Kensington in 1940.
Pauline married Lionel Beaumont-Thomas, 1893-1942, in 1913 and had four children. Lionel became an MP and after a long standing affair, the couple divorced. Pauline moved to Norfolk, but died in London in 1954.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is newly framed in an ornate 2 1/4" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
