James I oak boarded chest or six plank coffer
A rather attractive James I boarded chest - sometimes known as a six plank coffer - with chip carved ends, scratch moudling to front of lid, original spandrels to the front and the sides descending to ‘V cutaway supports. The patination and colour - especially to the top - are very pleasing indeed. These chests were simple by design and were used to house a multitude of items in the 17th century house. Retaining its original - if now a little delicate - wire hinges although the lock plate is later. It would have housed a till inside to the left - there are traces of this. These are often referred to as candle boxes but may well have kept herbs or lavender to give a pleasant scent to bedding or clothing stores inside.
The condition is very good with a slight crack to each end above the shaped section (probably where the wood was not properly seasoned) and at some point, quite a long time ago, someone has drilled and nailed the top closed so there are a couple of old holes at each end of the top. This may well have been to keep it safely closed on a journey. The original hinges still hold the top although these are a little delicate and care should be taken when opening the top - as with an early piece. PriceSOLD DimensionsMeasuring 39” wide, 25” high and 16” deep Category Antique Furniture Date c. 1620 Early 17th Century Antiques Material Oak Item code as226a076 Status Sold
