James I Boarded Chest Coffer c.1620
A substantial but small and beautiful six board oak coffer with original split pin iron hinges and original timbers with forged nailed fixings, chip carved borders and splayed V board feet.
With a fabulous colour and superb natural patination that only 400 years of use, wax and care can produce. The lack of carved decoration indicates that this chest was made as a purely functional piece of antique furniture to store precious items and it would have doubled as a seat.
Heavy and robust. Retaining original wire hinges, the iron lock plate is hand forged and riveted and a good few hundred years old and has been on the coffer for a very long time but is not the original. Braces have been added beneath the ends of top to shore up an old crack.
Made by hand in c. 1620 with scratch detailng to the top. A lovely solid and early example of great charm and particularly good colour and patina.
Dimensions are:
20.75 inches wide, 13.5 inches deep and 19.5 inches high.
For metric please multiply by 2.5
I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
