J Towlson of Chilwell Longcase clock
An oak 30hour Longcase clock made c1780 by Joseph Towlson of Chilwell (Nottinghamshire)
This small cottage clock is in excellent working condition and case and movement have obviously been well looked after.
Round dial Longcase clocks were very popular in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire area. Earlier examples had brass dials but towards the end of the 18th century the painted dial became available by Osborne and Wilson of Birmingham.
This a well maintained clock of a small size and often referred to as a cottage clock. Towlson worked in Chilwell Nottinghamshire and is listed in the book - Clock and watch makers of Nottinghamshire with his dates of 1773- 1780. His early clocks would we have sold had brass dials.
The case is almost all oak with an elm backboard and fruitwood pillars to the hood. Some minor restoration has taken place where loose mouldings have been obsessed. It would appear to have its original finish and has a good patination due to many years or regular wax polishing.
