Italian Walnut and Bone Savonarola X Frame Chair
An exquisite and of the finest quality Italian walnut and bone inlaid Savonarola X frame chair dating from the mid 19th Century.
This stunning antique x frame chair is decorated with geometric bone inlay linked together with a boxwood stringing with a shaped and carved back having a inset panel of a solider / musketeer inlaid with brass, pewter and bone with penwork.
The arms joined by five shaped and inlaid x frame supports continue down to the legs which are raised on a sleigh feet. A stunning antique Chair in fantastic condition which is sure to turn heads and become a focal / talking point of any room.
A little about Savonarola Chairs
The term Savonarola Chair is used to designate a chair fashioned after those favored by residents of 16th century Venice. The chairs usually have a curved, crossing or “X” base instead of legs and feature a deeply contoured seat. They are often heavily adorned with inlay or intricate carvings.
The name itself comes from Girolamo Savonarola, an Italian friar who defied the Church with his reform ideas and was ultimately executed for his efforts in 1498. The chairs are also sometimes referred to as “Dante” chairs or curule chairs. This type of chair was previously used extensively by the Romans and was known as the “sella curule.”
