India General service medal 1909, Afghanistan bar
The Indian General Service Medal (1909) was approved for issue to officers and men of British and Indian armies. In 1926 this was extended to include the RAF.
The obverse shows the Monarch's head, the reverse shows the fort at Jamrud with mountains in the background. Below this scene is a tied branch of oak and laurel with the word INDIA.
The medal was awarded to recognise minor military campaigns in India between 1908 and 1935. Each campaign is represented by a different bar. There are twelve different campaign bars.
This particular medal carries the Afghanistan NW Frontier 1919 bar.
This conflict started on 6th May 1919 and ended with an armistice on 8th August 1919. It is known as the "Third Anglo-Afghan war" or the "Third Afghan War".
The medal, as named on the edge, was issued to "G-27680 Pte A.R.Turner R.W.Kent.R." (a private with the Royal West Kent Regiment).
The medal bears the head of King George V.
The medal is full size, and measures approximately 3.5 cm (1.5") in diameter.
