Important 18th Century Vandercruse Mantel Clock
A rare and important 18th century French mantel antique clock by Vandercruse. Gilt bronze case with 2 love birds, lyre and musical instruments to the top and a pedestal tripod table with removable urn. Classical putti panelling to the base section and standing on a white marble plinth. A convex enamel dial signed 'Vandercruse a Paris' with fine gilt hands and 5 minute outer markers. An 8-day duration mechanism signed Vandercruse to the base with outside striking countwheel. Vandercruse is recorded in Baillies' Watchmakers and Clockmakers of The World' book as being master of the clockmaking company in 1778. This clock came from a private collection from a titled gentleman.
Roger Vandercruse Lacroix was born into one of the most important antique furniture making dynasties of the 18th century. He was the son of a cabinetmaker in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, brother of a clockmaker and was related through marriage to some of the most successful ébénistes of his day, including Jean-François Oeben and Jean-Henri Riesener. He became maître in 1755 and took over his father's workshop.
From 1769 to 1774, Vandercruse Lacroix supplied furniture to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. His workshop specialized in meubles volants, small fine pieces that could be moved about to suit the activity of the moment, and were admired for their marquetry in geometric and floral patterns made of tulipwood, amaranth, and kingwood. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Waddesdon Manor, Petit Palais in Paris and a clock in the National Museum in Warsaw.
