Huge RARE Industrial Salvaged GEC Hanging Lamp Light
30 photos on file - please ask for further images which show the piece at every angle before buying. Thank you
A Very Large and Rare Antique Industrial Salvaged Pendant Lamp
(Manufactured by GEC, England)
These iconic and massive, domed hexagonal reflector lamps by GEC are few and far between these days, very rarely making their way on to the market.
The design dates to the 1920's and was used in a number of the industrial and government installations of the day, but especially including aircraft hangers and other ancillary RAF buildings.
The design is quite wonderful, the vast domed, umbrella-like body, internally fitted with a number of mirror-glass segments as shown: a hypnotic, kaleidoscopic experience when viewed internally!
The tall upper 'chimney' and cowling from steel, with brass detailing.
Note, the twin brass hanging 'arms' and the brass fixing at the top of the cowl are recent additions - designed by myself and crafted by a highly skilled engineer. This is a 'non-invasive' addition to the lamp, which makes use of the existing design of the cowling. It suits the lamp well and with a little time the new brass will soften down a little.
Shown here with a small 40 watt bulb just to illustrate that it's working...but even this throws the light about very nicely. A better bulb can be chosen by the new owner.
The original painted finish of these lamps was often a dull earth-green colour. As this one had lost nearly all of its original paint due to flaking and surface blemishing, it has been carefully cleaned back and lightly burnished leaving a gorgeous, worn, pitted and patinated finish. It has subsequently been lightly waxed (with a good quality, conservation grade microcrystaline wax) to seal the finish.
In certain lights, the surface looks to be a flat, metallic grey, but when moved or viewed at differing angles it can look almost mecurial. I have tried to show this in the photos.
All of the glass segments are original, apart from just one piece, which I had cut to fit the space. The worn quality of the glass (with many blemishes and peeling imperfections to the back of the plates) compliments the worn and industrial look of the exterior.
This large and rare lamp would look absolutely fantastic in the right property and could be the ultimate, final, finishing touch to an industrial or mid-century cool themed interior.
The lamp is supplied complete with approx 4.5 meters of quality electrical flex, 4 meters of vintage brass hanging chain and a modern (but period look) hanging hook / rose to fit into the ceiling.
This is a worn and used character lamp and an original antique example......and pretty much the antithesis of modern reproduction examples.
I can say with confidence that I will not have another of these - they simply do not turn up - so if this is the right lamp for you, it's a case of grabbing it whilst you can.
Dimensions -
Overall height: 50 cms
Diameter, at widest point: 50cms
Circumference: Huge - approx 175 cms (!!)
Condition -
In used condition with extensive wear, pitting, marking, and areas of surface corrosion (largely stabilised by cleaning and waxing). The surface cleaned and burnished. Waxed. Internally, the antique glass with extensive wear, marking and peeling to the reflective backing of each plate (the glass absolutely retained for this very reason, and not replaced). The three brass tightening thumb screws to the upper cowling were carefully sourced and are modern like for like replacements to the originals. As noted the brass hanging arms and their fixings into the top of the cowl were designed by myself and fashioned by a skilled engineer.
