H. M. B. Victorian Watercolour Venice Canal 1893
We are pleased to offer this attractive Victorian watercolour of a Venetian canal by an artist who signed the painting with his or her initials H. M. B. and dated it 25th August, 1893. The watercolour is also inscribed in the lower right corner Venezia, just above the initials and date and, in the lower left hand corner it also says Canale Grande, although we think this was added later, as the writing is not quite the same and the Grand Canal is, in our experience, much wider. Unfortunately, in the past, the mount has been placed partly over this inscription and that of the date and initials of the artist and, as the watercolour has discoloured under the old acidic mount, we have had to place the new mounts in the same position.
The paper that has been used for the watercolour is either handmade, or has a very textured 'rough' tooth, as can be seen from our photographs.
The painting depicts a church to the right, with a campanile or bell tower. A palazzo with balconies and arched windows is across a side canal from the church, but in the main canal is a gondolier in a covered gondola, once prevalent in Venice. There is another moored to the left.
We have, unfortunately, been unable to discover the identity of the artist, but this is a lovely painting with some very good detail to the buildings and the gondola.
The watercolour has been newly mounted in two tone, acid-free mountboard, and is newly framed in a soft bronze frame to suit. It will be supplied with all new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 16 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches - 42.55cm x 27.35cm
Frame size: 24 5/8 x 18 7/8 inches - 62.55cm x 48cm
Medium: Watercolourws on paper
Condition: Very good. There is no foxing and there is no damage to the visible paper. The mounts and frame are new.
