Gothic Revival Cast Iron & Carrara Marble Table
Of gothic influence, the later white veined Bardiglio Carrara marble top with a pierced brass foliate under tier frieze, on a pierced Gothic design painted cast iron pedestal of entwined foliage to a tiered circular base with gadrooning and three scrolling feet each with gilded central rosettes, survives from the Gothic revival period of Victorian England with later additions.
The table is in very good overall condition, there are no flaws or deficiencies to note. The marble top is later than the base, with the cast iron having been retouched at some stage. The marble is mid to late 20thC and is in super condition as a result. To the underside the marble is fixed permanently to a wooden mounting board so the piece is in one piece rather than being able to be disassembled. There are remnants of a label to the underside of the marble top showing it has come directly from Italy.
It is uncommon to find a period Gothic revival piece paired with marble of any kind, which is a shame as the marble does help to lift the heaviness of the motifs and style that one finds in gothic inspired pieces. This table probably had a different top altogether at the time it was made, and as such, we now find a happy marriage between the two materials and styles. The iron support to this table has some influence of the famous makers of Coalbrookedale designs to it and with its flashes of gilt to the top and bottom it has a nice balance of darkness and light.
An unusual and rather magical table with large decorative appeal, she can sit happily in either modern or period interiors, or exteriors for that matter.
