Golden Oak Bureau Bookcase. Arts and Crafts 1880
This is a really handsome and very good quality Arts and crafts Bureau Bookcase. It is made in golden oak and dates to about 1880.
The influences of an earlier antique style are clearly evident in the bureau design, (that of the William and Mary Period circa 1700), but this is no copy or attempt at reproduction. (See notes below )
Excellent condition throughout.
The bookcase has three fully adjustable original shelves (illustrated with 2 in use)
The Bureau Fall has a working lock and key (old replacements) and the loper supports extend automatically as the fall is lowered. Internally the bureau is in very clean, original condition with 2 drawers, pigeon holes and the original canvas cloth writing surface.
The bureau is fitted below with one long drawer 3 short drawers and a document cabinet with a shelf, 2 positions.
There are no keys for the bookcase or the document cabinet door below, but both grip the door frames well when closed.
The large cast brass pear drop handles are all original and of the highest quality.
Height: 84 Inches Width: 42 Inches Depth: 20.5 Inches
Notes: The Arts and Craft movement presented a radical shift from the increasingly fussy and elaborate Victorian taste of the mid 19th Century, and kicked strongly against the notion of industrialised mass produced goods. Innovators and designers like William Morris and John Ruskin helped to develop the movement and foster the skills of trades and crafts that were at risk of being lost forever by the pressures of mechanisation.
Drawing on antique and medieval styles proved a common theme to many arts and craft designs, and this is clearly the case with this bureau. However by choosing to use golden oak, and bevelled glass for the bookcase and incorporating original elements to the design such as the document cabinet, a contemporary edge to a classic bureau form has been achieved. ALL OF OUR PRICES INCLUDE FREE UK MAINLAND DELIVERY.
