Goberg Steel Chamberstick & Matchbox Holder c1900
We have for sale a very decorative and rather striking German arts and crafts Goberg steel chamberstick dating to somewhere around 1900.
This very eye catching steel Gothic inspired arts and crafts chamberstick consists of a fixed sconce centered in an associated bowl like wax pan which extends to stem and also handle. The stem and the handle in turn extend to a circular steel base. The base also extends to a matchbox holder positioned opposite to the handle. The chamberstick carries the impressed Goberg mark to the underside of the base.
The German company Goberg was founded in Schmalkalden in 1895 by Hugo Berger. He mostly worked in iron and produced a range of decorative arts and crafts ironwares strongly influenced by gothic themes. His work became popular worldwide and in the UK his wares were retailed by Liberty and Co of London.
The chamberstick is approximately 7 inches (18cm) high, 5.5 inches (14cm) in diameter to the base and is in a very good antique condition with no more than the wear one would expect from a well looked after candle stick of the period.
