It is not often you find shipping line memorabilia mint in the box but here it is! A delightful powder bowl made for Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company. It is in mint condition in the original box with the card from the Chairman & Managing Director. This company commissioned A.S.Brown & Co. to make vanities as gifts for their first class lady passengers. The Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Company ( P&O) originally operated on the Iberian Peninsula. In 1844 P&O became
the first company in the world to offer passenger cruises. The Company became very powerful, bought out other operators & built faster & more luxurious vessels that travelled to the most exotic locations. The powder bowl bears the P & O coat of arms and the inscription - " Quis nos separabit " ( who will separate us.) The enchanting coat of arms is decorated with a lion, an elephant, a dragon & a kangaroo which represented the Company's considerable interests in Britain, India, China & Australia.
Such a gorgeous 1950s gift. The whole item gleams & has never been used.
The lid & base have complex engine turned designs. The sides have a granulated / textured finish & the whole item is the deepest richest gold. The mirror is excellent & the mirror bezel is inscribed 'MADE IN ENGLAND'. The original sifter & puff are in place & they are immaculate. The card from the The Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Company reads 'QUIS NOS SEPARABIT With the Compiments of the Chairman and Managing Directors of the P. & O. S. N. Company'. Even the original box is in good condition.
