Georgian Domed Brass-studded Leather Trunk
This is a small Georgian domed, brass-studded leather travel trunk in good condition with its original paper lining including an interesting maker's label for J. Shepherd, c.1800.
It has a brass carrying handle on the lid below which is a brass plate engraved with the owner's name 'Col. W. Miles'. It is, therefore, very likely that this small trunk went on campaign with the Colonel to one or more parts of the Empire. The interior is lined with antique newspaper and decorated with a pattern of black dots. The maker's label carries the following inscription: 'John Shepherd Trunk Maker & Undertaker, No 90, near the Bull Inn, Bishopsgate Street, LONDON. All sorts of trunks, Chests, Liquor Cases, Boxes, Packing Cases, for the East & West. Indian & American Trade.
Dimensions:
Width 45 cm (17 3/4 inch)
Depth 26.5 cm ( 10 1/2 inch)
Height 23 cm (9 inch)
Weight: 2.7 kg
Condition: It is in very good antique condition given that it would have had a hard life as a travel trunk. The interior is well preserved. The odd stud and some of the leather is missing on the exterior.
Postage & packing: £12 within the UK. Please contact us for a quote if you are an international buyer and would like it sent overseas.
John Shepherd (1760–1817), trunk maker and undertaker, the founding father of the Shepherd family firm, established the business in 1778, operating from 90 Bishopsgate, where it remained until 1865.
