George VI Silver Compact, William Neale, 1948

Here we have a stylish George VI Sterling Silver Powder Compact with Rose Gold Trim. The compact is square with engine turned decoration to back and front. The front has a line of geometric rose gold decoration down each side. There is a mirror set into the lid and an inner divider above the powder compartment. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The compact was made in Birmingham by William Neale & Son and dates to 1948, just after World War Two. The firm was founded by William Neale in Birmingham in 1862 and registered marks in both Birmingham and Chester. They became William Neale & Son in 1890. The company produced a very wide range of silverware from trophies to tea services and cigarette boxes to pencils and were highly successful. They remained in business into the mid 1960s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the mirror and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. The hinge, clasp and inner clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The compact is 6.8cm / 2.7ins square and 0.7cm / 0.27ins deep when closed. It weighs 112.3g / 3.96oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Y for 1948 and the W N & S Ld in a shield makers' mark for William Neale & Son Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the compact.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
